Fall & Frizz

As the temperatures begin their slow decline and the air starts to get dry, you are going to notice an increase in frizz and flyaways.

In general, frizz is the result of not enough moisture, over-shampooing hair, or humidity:

  • Not Enough Moisture: Heat breaks down the chemical bonds that keep your hair straight and roughen the cuticle, taking away shine and smoothness. When your hair looks damaged, it highlights those split or broken ends, giving your locks an untamed appearance.
  • Over-Shampooing: Water makes your strands swell from the inside, forcing the cuticle up. Combine this with shampoos that strip your hair of its natural oils and you’re left with dull, frizzy strands.
  • Humidity: Your hair naturally absorbs airborne moisture which causes it to swell in high humidity. In the Fall when humidity is low, there isn’t enough moisture to draw on so your hair often goes flatter or limper than normal, and dries out.

Step up your hair care game by following these easy tips to keep your hair silky and smooth!

Use A Sulfate-Free Shampoo

Sulfate-free shampoos provide a gentler clean that won’t strip away your hair’s natural oils or your hair color.

Deep Conditioner

Ideally we recommend doing a deep conditioning once a week. If your hair is exceptionally thick though, you may benefit from a daily or every other day deep conditioning. Let your conditioner sit for at least 5 minutes before you wash it off. When drying dab, don’t rub. Rubbing a towel against your hair will create friction which leads to breakage and flyaways.

Leave-In Conditioner

Think of your hair like a sponge. When it’s dry, it absorbs humidity from the air and swells. Apply a leave-in conditioner or anti-frizz cream to put a protective coat around your hair shaft to lock in moisture, hydrate, and smooth.

Heat Protectant

We cannot say it enough: heat is so bad for your hair. (It makes you question why hot styling tools became so popular doesn’t it?) Before applying heat–whether it’s a straightener, a curling iron, a crimper, or a blow-dryer–spritz your hair from root to end with a heat protectant spray. Then comb through to evenly distribute.

Set Your Hot Styling Tools To A Lower Setting

Just because your tools can hit 400 degrees doesn’t mean it has to, especially if you have fine hair. Set your curling iron or straightener between 250 and 300 degrees to reduce the amount of heat damage.

Apply A Curling Cream

Curly hair and frizz are best friends. Curls are naturally dryer and as previously mentioned, dry hair absorbs moisture from the air and swells, creating frizz and flyaways. Use a curling cream to enhance your natural curl pattern, shape, separate, and control curls, and defrizz.

Wear Silk Hair Ties or Scrunchies

Hair ties tug at your strands and cause scalp stress and cuticle damage that lead to frizz and flyaways. Look for silk ties instead of elastics or leave your hair loose around your shoulders. If you’re concerned about your hair falling into your face, pin it back!

Upgrade To A Silk Pillowcase

When cotton or wool rubs against your hair it creates friction. Silk is gentler and creates less friction, reducing frizz and breakage.

Get Frequent Haircuts

Wear and tear naturally causes your ends to split and break. When you don’t regularly trim your hair, those splits can run up the entire shaft and frizz out. Make it your yearly mission to visit a salon regularly to keep your ends clean, smooth, and healthy.
